Waste transport to the UK - why are changes necessary?

The governments of the UK, Scotland and Northern Ireland and Wales have come to an agreement in 2022. This was because they jointly recognised that a monitoring system for waste shipments was necessary to prevent the further development of the so-called grey market and to prevent the illegal transport of waste to or from the Islands. Two years later, the work is almost complete and the tool will be put into operation already in April 2025.

This is another after SENT i RO e-Transport a system to ensure transparency in the supply of waste. It is also intended to replace outdated and ineffective solutions such as EDO systemC.

The solution will allow real-time tracking of what happens to the waste being transported. It will also support better enforcement of waste law. It will also play an important role in supporting businesses to manage the waste they produce. The UK government hopes that the system will help in the transition to a closed-loop economy. It is also intended to maximise the value extracted from resources.

There is still some time to go before the introduction of compulsory registration in this system. However, it is worthwhile for you to take an interest in it now. Information

Come back here from time to time - this article will be updated as soon as there is new information on the UK's waste transport monitoring system.

UPDATE 04.04.2025:

The transport monitoring system was initially planned to be launched in April 2025, but this date has been postponed to April 2026. The decision follows concerns raised by industry representatives and project partners. They pointed out the difficulties in preparing for the mandatory use of the system within the original timeframe. The postponement is intended to ensure that the new IT system is properly tested, meets users' expectations and allows companies to adapt to the new requirements.

The system is currently under development. This is all to ensure that it functions smoothly and meets the needs of the various stakeholder groups. Companies and organisations involved in waste management should therefore keep an eye on further government announcements on the progress of the project. It is also important to prepare for the implementation of new procedures in line with the planned system.
