SENT system in 2024 - what is changing?

In order to be able to carry out waste transport in Poland, to Poland and in transit through Poland, a company must meet a number of requirements. Among the most important are: declaration of transport in the SENT system and registration in the Waste Database (BDO). Due to the constantly changing waste management industry, the regulations concerning it must be adapted to the current market situation. What has changed with the start of 2024?

The SENT and BDO system - how it all began

The SENT system has been in operation since 2017 under the relevant law (for more on this, see the "Offer - SENT"). However, it was not until five years later, after analyses had been carried out, that it was decided to supplement it also with products that were waste. The reason for this decision was to better control the movement of this type of material through Poland. It was also supposed to be a way of combating the so-called grey market and illegal shipments, which unfortunately still take place.

The BDO system, on the other hand, was set up on 24 January 2018, and has been continuously improved to serve as an audit tool for companies dealing with waste management. It was also intended to assist these companies in meeting their statutory obligations. To this end, training courses are also organised, e.g. on the correct completion of Waste Transfer Cards for producers and transport companies.

Changes for the better

SENT

As far as the SENT module is concerned, the most important change that came into force concerns exports. This is because it has been made compulsory to declare 11 Group 8 waste codes in the event of export outside the country. These include slurries, paints and adhesives.

The above change is due to the provisions in Decree of the Climate Minister of 9 October 2023which came into force on 12 January 2024.
